Sandra E. Westphal, 74, of Janesville died on Sunday, May 7, 2017 at her home following a hard fought  battle with a long illness. Sandra was born on October 15, 1942 in Milwaukee, WI, the daughter of Dr. Walter H. and Elva Delia (Brekke) Funke. She grew up in West Milwaukee where she graduated from high school. Sandra attended UW Milwaukee for two years and graduated from UW Madison. She received a master’s degree in transitional and special needs from UW Whitewater. Sandra married William E. Westphal on June 26, 1965 and the marriage resulted in three daughters. Sandra taught grade school in the Janesville school system, taught inmates at the Rock County jail so they could receive a GED and taught at Black Hawk Technical College. She was a member of First Lutheran Church where she had been active on several boards. She was member of the A A U W and had been a member of the Junior Woman’s Club.

Sandra is survived by her husband, William E. Westphal, three daughters, Lisa (Paul) Rippe,  Kristina (Kevin) Bohrer, Cynthia “Cia” Westphal, two grandchildren, Alaina and Sarah Bohrer, her sister, Karen (Ronald) Hayward and her brother, Dr. James (Mary) Funke and a special friend, Mary Gorniak. She was preceded in death by her parents, and her brother, Fred Funke.

Funeral services will be at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, May 11, 2017 at First Lutheran Church 612 N. Randall Avenue, Janesville.  Rev. James Melvin will officiate. Burial will follow in Oak Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be at First Lutheran Church on Thursday from 10 a.m. until the time of services. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice. The family is being assisted by Henke-Clarson Funeral Home (608-741-1713).
